Avatar: The Last Airbender Episode Guide

WHAT?????? This episode did NOT suck and was NOT boring. In fact, it’s one of my FAVOURITE episodes. Such strong emotions and so real. This is what’s so awesome about Avatar, it picks up on every little detail, making sure to highlight an important reaction from Aang to appa’s capture. You can really feel the anger in Aang! So rare from animated shows to depict raw emotions like this. Especially that last scene, it was so powerful! I LOVED IT. 5 stars!!

I thought it was a deeply moving episode…and that’s not just coz imma gurl. it show deep realistic emotions and feelings, not often shown on your averege cartoon. i believe the creators put a genuine effort into this chapter, and suceeded. be grateful, coz u two couldnt make up a storyline this good in your dizziest day dreams! if u didnt like it why watch it?

I agree with Water Tribe Angel, K@ty@rr@ and White Lotus; this has been my favourite episode so far and this series is by far the best anime I’ve seen. It’s the emotions, how you understand how they feel and start feeling that way yourself. All those people who hate Katara obviously can’t understand these emotions, otherwise you wouldn’t be saying that. I kinda pity the people who watch this and other animes like it and only think it’s good because of how ‘badass’ or ‘cool’ it is. It’s like your not watching the whole thing…
On a side note; Sokka… I… er… um… Yeah. Just Sokka. xD

Im with the girls on this one (Water Tribe Angel and Whitelotus), i understand how much Aang hates the Avatar State, and you would do too. It’s like when you wake up with a really bad hangover and cant remember what happened, and then you find out you hurt people you really care about when you were no yourself. You feel like crap and hate being powerless.
P.S Im irish, but also a guy (shrug) just thought id say

Also, I’d like to add to my comment a while ago, I think the emotions between Aang and Katara are just incredible in this episode. Aang just lost Appa, his only real friend (his other friends at the air temple became distant after they found out he was the Avatar) and then after he was frozen in an iceberg; he woke up a hundred years later with no-one but him.
Obviously after a few days (first few eps) he befriended Sokka and Katara, but Appa was still his closest. Then he just lost him. I can’t really explain it but I can really connect with Aang in that he’s just lost his best friend and is very confused, he’s furious at the sandbenders, devastated by the loss of Appa, and probably guilty for yelling at and blaming his friends. (and the one he loves…)
I also connected with Katara too, she’s just trying to get everyone out of the desert safely; and it must’ve been so hard to see Aang so conflicted inside over Appa (bearing in mind she loves him and cares deeply about him) and she has to keep hope when everyone else has lost it…
Then, at the end of the episode when Aang goes into the Avatar State; she’s pretty much heartbroken at watching him in that much pain and anger. In that moment, when everyone is running for their lives, she just stands there, with a sort of broken look on her face and pulls Aang into a hug WHILE HE’S STILL IN THE AVATAR STATE. Did you get that? While he’s the most powerful being on the planet AND out of control; and she pulls him out of it, and just stands there in a very emotional hug while they both cry…
People just don’t connect like this to points like this in episodes and I don’t know why but all they see is the animating skills or something…. to me that’s just shallow.

This is my favorite episode because Aang is soooo MAD!
He totally murdered that bug vulture thing.
MURDERED!
Aang is a monk, he doesn’t kill anything…
And then he KILLS a living creature because it attacked his other pet, even AFTER he already rescued Momo.
This episode made Aang HUMAN.
Even after the fire nation destroys his entire race of people, Aang is able to suck it up and move on, which I believe is just ridiculous. But here we see that Aang completely loses his identity without Appa.
This episode is 100% badass

I like how not only did he say this completely deadpan, but he made no attempt to do anything about it. Like oh look Toph’s on fire, when did that happen.
Oh and also, I don’t think Zuko’s anything like Vegeta. Vegeta was way tougher and much more arrogant. Though I can see the whole redemption banished prince thing going on. Vegeta never lost anyone he really cared about. Actually I don’t think there was ever anyone he did care about.

Agree with you totally here. I love this episode, the comedy is great and all but definitely the highlight for me is the highly emotional ending.
I also think it’s of significance that while Aang is capable of destroying anything in the avatar state, when Katara interferes he can never hurt her. There was a wonderful moment in the episode when he was in the state, and when she first grabs him he turns and looks at her, then he begins to calm down. She always is a symbol of everything that is important to him, and I think with the way the show progresses that this emotional connection between the two of them is something very special and very rarely shown as well in TV shows (anime or not) as it has been here. I also think that it’s significant that of all his friends Katara is the only one against him using the avatar state, because of how it changes and what it does to him.

I think Aang did really lose the plot a bit when he found out about the airbenders all being killed. He seemed more distant because he didn’t have as strong a bond with most of them, and he had decided to run away. He did however go into the Avatar state when he learned of Monk Kyatso’s death, however we see him battling with guilt mostly even though the Fire Nation is responsible. He doesn’t get angry like he does here because he blames himself for what happened to them. And all through the first season we see how this affects and in some ways defines his character.
Loved the Episode overall, it was fantastic. Feel so bad for Katara, Aang and Appa who all ahve to deal with the worst of the problems facing them.
