Avatar: The Last Airbender Episode Guide

Still seeking an earthbending master, Aang and the crew stumble upon an earthbending tournament. While there, they find a blind master earthbender, Toph, the girl whom Aang saw as a vision in “The Swamp”. Aang challenges her and easily defeats her with airbending, but she refuses to teach him earthbending. Both Aang and Toph are captured by the owner of the earthbending tournament.

First of all, thank you so much for posting these episodes online. Even though I have the series on DVD, it’s nice to come somewhere to get a quick “Avatar fix” when I’m away from home.
And to second what Mike said, this too, is one of my favorite episodes. There’s just so much to like: Katara intimidating the Earth Kingdom boys, Earth Rumble, Sokka’s ah, enthusiasm and Katara reactions (*slap* “don’t boo him!”), Toph and Aang at diner, and yes, Toph’s badass-edness!
Ever since Toph joined Team Avatar, she has quickly become my favorite character in the series.

I love Katara too. She’s really sweet and kind and has a temper (which i always find fun in female characters), plus she’s a great waterbender ^^ But aren’t you being unfair to Toph? Maybe she’s not essential, but she is funny and an amazing earth bender (she even invented metal bending!) I know she’s kinda bratty but she lived her whole life without friends and people not even knowing she existed. And people pitied her which must be annoying…anyways that would turn anyone a little sour right?
Oh, and of course she uses basic moves. Earthbendings about being solid and simple, Waterbendings more complicated.

Toph isn’t an outwardly nice person, but she does have friends in Ang, Katara and them. People have different tastes in friends, and I know we’re talking about a cartoon character, but I think there are people who understand her and doesn’t need her to be nice to know she’s a good person.
Actually, to be honest, I don’t think she’s that bratty. But I guess that’s just a matter of opinion :] Anyways, I guess Bumi’s wasn’t that basic…but still Toph is blind so I don’t think she’s interested in complicated moves just getting rid of the enemy. I don’t think I worded that right, but oh well.

By the end of the series Toph does get better… even if it’s just a little bit. She was essential for a few things dotted around too, like on the Day of Black Sun when they had to find that underground bunker, I suppose no other earthbender would’ve been able to find that… hm. meh. xD

first and foremost, I dont want to drag this on and make it “The latest thing to argue about.” Secondly, I dont hate either of you, you seem nice, and because I KIND OF understand where you coming from…..but only little…….
In my opinion, Toph is most DEFINETLEY bratty. I hated the way she teased and hurt Katara for being too motherly. she dosent understand what it’s like to loose someone you love….I understand that pain…..my older brother Seamus died four years ago. Toph has been spoiled, pampered and showered with luxuries all her life. Everyone else in “Gaang” has faced serious hardships, except her. she’s only been affected by minor things.
And Im sure Toph could use complicated moves if she wanted to, seeing as she knocked about 40 buff men out of an arena…..
And Toph will never EVER be as funny Sokka…..never. Sokka’s jokes are 9000000000000000000000000 times funnier. Toph uses sarcasm, and that’s just lame.

Okay, I’ve never lost someone i love, so i can’t say anything about that. And I’m sorry about your brother, but you can’t say loneliness is a minor thing. People NEED other people. Being alone can twist and destroy you. You’ve probably felt lonely before too, but Toph has always been alone. And childhood is one of the most important times.

Im not still grieving over my brother, It was a long time ago, but I still feel the emptiness, the aloness, the knowing that he wont ever come back and that I’ll never see him again. Katara probably feels like this only 1o times worse. Perhaps I dont like Toph too much because I feel like she hasnt seen the half of it. I suppose LolipopXOX has got through to me enough and convinced me to like Toph a little. I’ll still never LOVE her charecter, and at times I will feel like kicking her, but hey, she’s not the worst, I guess. so thank you.

Sure, Sokka’s sister isn’t all perfect. But neither I’m not either.
Why, I remember Katara hater telling me to shut online for defending Katara. But I got back at that jerk by telling him or her off.
Even though I’m not obsessed with Katara, I’d defend her and anyone who badmouths me for defending her. She’s my favorite female character in the Avatar universe, after all. Besides, I’m similar to that gal because she’s like me in that I’m no-nonsense and quick-tempered on the outside but sensible, mature, and caring on the outside.
Also, I can relate to Katara in that I have problems that are similar to hers. Therefore, I know what she went and goes through. An example is that I can feel her pain emotionally.
But just because I really Katara, it doesn’t mean that I’m the same gender. Instead of being female, I’m actually male. However, I believe that my temper’s worse than Katara’s. Then again, guys’ tempers’ are usually worse than gals’ tempers.
As for Toph, she reminds me too much of that female Land Before Time Triceratops who’s known as Cera and that Darkwing Duck gal who’s named Gosalyn due to their excessive attitude problems and her girlish scream. And all three of those characters make me glad that I don’t have a girlfriend.
Also, it really ticks me off when Toph fans shove their opinions down the throats of those who don’t like her. It’s not right to do that. Everyone has a right to dislike Toph and express it just as everyone has a right to like Toph.
If those Toph lovers keep forcing their opinions on others, those people who aren’t Toph fans could get back at her supporters.
Back to Katara: It also ticks me off that there are people who don’t understand her just because they see only her negative. If they dislike her, fine. But they shouldn’t shove their opinions down the throats of other people.
Another reason why I like Katara better than Toph is because she’s more serious and doesn’t take things to the extreme as much as the Earthbending girl does. I’m more serious person, which makes me like serious things better than funny things.
What’s more is that I’m more of a happy medium person, which is what I believe that Katara is too. And I bet that you people know what a happy medium is. If you don’t know but want to know, feel free to look it up.”

like i said, on the contrary, i do not slag katara. an yes, she did play an important part in sozin’s comet. she metalbended the ship’s fin so that it would boomerang through the other ships. this said, EVERYONE played an important part in ending the war. they’re the GAANG, a team. and does she gets a true love like katara, suki or mai? come on….she’s 12. honestly, tell me, who fins their true love when they’re 12,14 or 16? like i said, i like kataang, it used to be my flag ship until i became taang, but look at things realistically.
toph is bada$$, ok. she’s the the greatest earthebender at only 12, she’s the only known metal bender, she can bend sand, and her abilities come in especially handy. for example, in the day of the black sun, where they were looking for ozai.

like i said…not a waste of space. you have to see where toph is coming from. all her life, all she’s known is over protective parents who don’t understand her. she’s never had a real friend. as such, its harder for her to show affection like other ppl do. but does that mean she’s a bad person? just cuz she’s different? look…i respect toph, because she’s true to who she is. she doesn’t go around putting up a facde, what u see is what u get with her. she’s direct and blunt. she isn’t afraid to speak her mind, and she’s a very strong-willed, tough person. i dunno…but from my experience with my parents…nagging…=( but i agree, katara is nice person, and she shows it throughout the series, she’s the caring type, and who says toph doesn’t care? like i said, she shows it differently.

u cannot say toph is spoiled. when she joined the gaang at the end of the episode, all she had was teh clothes she was wearing. how is that spoiled? it doesn’t matter if you are rich. money does not equal happiness. all toph ever wanted was to be accepted by her parents, and that’s why she appears “bratty” in the show. she never really knw how it felt to be loved, it’s a hardship in iteself. living liek that for the first 12 years of her life.

i respect how katara is ur fav character, i agree, it’s because of her motherly ways that aang did not lose control of his avatar state. but the gaang consits of the whole team, aang, katara, toph, sokka, appa, and momo (later on zuko)
this may seem like im totally arguing with i hatehatehate toph witha passion, but im jsut debating and stating my case, and making my point. now, what i REALLY hate, is all the bashers out there. i personally don’t understand tokka, but that does NOT mean i hate it. since i don’t get it, i jsut stay neutral, i don’t say bad stuff about tokka shippers…cmon everyone, show respect, that includes all my fellow taangers who bash katara….cmon….

That’s identical to what I feel. I know Katara isnt perfect too, but I’d defend her against anyone. Toph, to me, is a spoilt little brat who pushes people around and hurts people. Sure, she’s funny….that dosent make her the best charecter ever!!!!!

toph’s moves are not basics. it may look easy but it takes lots of time to practice. toph’s technique is called “southern praying mantis”. it is a technique when you use the power of your feet, run it up through your body and blast it off to your arms creating great power to overthrow your opponent. just like a baseball pitcher raising his foot and down to transfer his energy to his arm tho pitch hard. tai chi is kinda similar. they may look easy and slow. but they use their energy from their feet. southern praying mantis is an awesome style of martial art. and a very rare one. only few people can master this. and toph totally did. and like the other styles the earthbenders use, hunggar, preying mantis depends on their feet. really awesome.
so stop underestimating the power of southern preying mantis. ESPECIALLY THE KICKASS TOPH…

Anyways, let peolple hate who they want. I cant stand Toph either and she’s a lame fighter with no interesting tricks or moves up or her sleeve. Katara would easily win her in a battle with her graceful yet lethal skills. plus Katara is funnier, nicer and better looking.
